Increased use of AI among children
Kaspersky has said in its latest report that there has been an increase in the use of artificial intelligence (AI) among children.
Kaspersky has released its annual analytical report on children's digital hobbies, covering the period from May 2024 to April 2025.
The report shows the growing interest of children in artificial intelligence-powered chatbots, however, YouTube remains the most popular app among children globally, while WhatsApp overtook TikTok to take second place.
Recent studies show that children aged 8 to 10 spend an average of 6 hours on screens per day, while children aged 11 to 14 spend an average of 9 hours online per day. The top 5 most popular Android apps in Pakistan are YouTube, WhatsApp, TikTok, Instagram and Roblox, but Character.AI is also in 13th place.
In this year’s report, Kaspersky found an increase in interest in artificial intelligence (AI) tools, although no AI apps appeared in the 20 most used applications during the period 2023-2024, however, ‘Character.AI’ has now joined the list, showing that children are not only curious about AI but are actively integrating it into their digital lives.
The most common online activity among children was searching for streaming platforms on Google, with nearly 18% of all queries related to watching videos, with YouTube remaining the clear favorite Android app, increasing from 28.13% to 29.77% over the past year. While Snapchat and Facebook continued to decline. This shift may reflect changing communication habits, as kids are increasingly using chat apps to share links, memes and short videos with friends.
According to Anna Larkina, Privacy Expert at Kaspersky, this year’s trends show how quickly children’s digital preferences are changing, from chatting with AI bots one day to singing an Italian meme song you’ve never heard of the next.
